Even though summer nears its end in September, events around the country abound. Labor Day weekend is one of the most action packed weekends of the year. Everyone wants to round out the summer with a blast. Several well known jazz festivals are on the schedule, an outrigger canoe race, Burning Man, tall shops festival and more. After a late night of exotic entertainment at Asia SF, our day got started very early. Although it was raining I decided to capture a few photos of the area surrounding our hotel, The Handlery Union Square Hotel, which is located on downtown Geary Street. I walked just a few steps east to Union Square, the heart of San Francisco's shopping, hotel and theatre district. Big shopping venues such as Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus surround this historic square. Luxury stores such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Chanel, Prada, Armani and Hermes are also represented.

Just west from The Handlery are two historic theatres: the Geary and Curran Theatres. The Moscone Convention Centre and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art are close by as well. Before our excursion to Muir Woods I embarked on an hour long walk to check out some of the streets surrounding Union Square and had a delicious waffle breakfast in a little 24 hour eatery called Pinecrest Diner. I enjoyed looking out the windows, seeing the city awake.

Vibrant coral reefs are scattered all over the sea bottom in the close vicinity of the very protected launching site and varies from only a few meters to over 40 meters deep and therefore cater for the beginner as well as the advanced diver! This is the divers chance to indulge him/herself in coral reef diving "par excellence" and to experience the sight of huge Mata rays, whale sharks, enormous moray eels, vigorous game fish, massive potato basses and more! Nowhere else in Mozambique are Mantas so common and it is no wonder that the Inhambane coast is lately being called, the “Manta Coast”!

Not to be outdone by beautiful oceanfront paths at Kaanapali and Wailea, the Kapalua area has its own stunning trail by the beach. Kapalua Coastal Trail even received the American Planning Association Hawai‘i Chapter’s Environmental/Preservation Award. Being aficionados of these kinds of trails we made our way to Kapalua to check it out and enjoy another day of Maui wonders. After a walk through the Kapalua Ritz and their property we drove to a small parking lot at Kapalua Place and Ironwood Ln, parked there and headed down the well maintained set of stairs toward Oneloa Bay.

Walking through the streets of downtown Manhattan Beach is a favorite pastime of ours. The area has a nice beachy upscale feeling and some of our favorite coffee shops, eateries and such. When new establishments come to town we check them out as soon as we can. One such place we observed is Simmzy's Pub, a relative newcomer. I remember this space housing a Japanese restaurant not long ago. We noticed crowds every time we passed by Simmzy's and that only increased our wish to visit it in the near future. We had lunch there last week and here is the verdict.

I have not been to Hank's Bistro in several years prior to this last visit. We used to go there for good Persian food all the time. A lunch time meeting with a friend in the area reminded me of this restaurant and the decision was made to have our mid day meal there. We met around noon on this weekday. The restaurant is located on the corner of Hawthorne Blvd and Rosecrans in a mini mall. The signs for the restaurant have faded a bit and the inscription with the name was hard to read. The Persian lettering was more obvious.

In the midst of running a million errands today, I stopped for a quick lunch at Yokohama Sushi in Culver City. It is located in the mall at the corner of Venice and Overland. You cannot see it from the street however. It is well hidden in a passage way between the Starbucks and Best Buy (generally speaking). I walked in to ask if they had lunch specials, they showed me some combinations that looked good and my mind was made up.

If you are staying anywhere in the vicinity of the University of Pennsylvania main campus, recommendations for dinner will always include the White Dog Cafe. Such was the case for us. We spent a few days at the Inn at Penn. This restaurant was a brief walk from our lodging and we decided to check it out. This block on Sansom houses several restaurants and a food court making it a popular eating spot for students and visitors alike. We were fortunate to visit this area during the summer when outdoor dining was in full swing. We walked to the restaurant and I am not sure how things are with parking.

Indian restaurants in Bangkok usually fall into one of several categories: very high-end places with traditional northern Indian cuisine, mid-level places with the same type of menu and very low-end southern Indian and vegetarian places. However, Red Indian restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 55 sort of breaks the mold. It is not really expensive and offers a surprising variety of Indian dishes that come primarily from the north but also represent many different areas of this large and incredibly diverse culinary country.

Sakae has received some stellar reviews over at Yelp and I could not wait to get me some of that sushi. Its location, just a ten minute rive, was perfect. I read online that it was take-out only and that the storefront was small. My general expectations were set. Google Street View proved most useful again and I knew exactly what this small restaurants looks like from the outside. The entrance is off Denker Avenue and the signs says, obviously, Sakae Sushi. Parking is available behind the building, just keep going on Denker Avenue until you see it. At one o'clock in the afternoon, on this weekday, several parking spaces were available. It seems like people drive in and out of here steadily and parking spaces open up quickly.

mar'sel Restaurant was on our list of restaurants to try in the South Bay since it opened recently along with the entire Terranea Resort. Its location and views were very promising. Not much has been written about it yet and we were curious to learn about its cuisine. We decided to try it for a special event dinner. Reservations were made through OpenTable.com a few days in advance for a Tuesday evening dinner. Almost all times slots were booked already but we managed to get an early dinner spot at 5.30pm. We tried calling them too but it seems like you can never get through to the restaurant directly. You have to leave a message and wait for the return call.

The Wailea Beach Path offers a great way to explore the beaches and resorts in this part of Maui. As always, we were thrilled to learn that such a public walking trail exists and planned some time to visit it. We were staying in the Kaanapali Resort area which meant that we would have to drive some twenty five miles to our destination. We packed our rental with goodies and took an enjoyable drive to our destination. Traffic was favorable and we arrived to our destination in around forty five minutes.

Every now and then I get a craving for some really good fried chicken. This craving is satisfied most often at the nearest fast food place that serves it. Last week I decided to perform an Internet search for fried chicken restaurants in my area. Flossie's was mentioned several times as a great, affordable local restaurant that serves fried chicken. They were even mentioned in LA Times as a hidden gem, or something like that. That was enough for me. I fired up the car and drove to Flossie's to check it out.
