Seats may become available due to cancellations, passengers not showing up for their reserved flight or just by being late from other legs of their trip. Most often, passengers on the standby list have tickets for other flights (later in the day, etc.) with the same airline. Priority on the standby list varies based on numerous circumstances : missed flights, class of travel, frequent flier status, number of passengers and others.
